Skin Cancer Treatment in Anchorage & Eagle River, Alaska
Medical Oncology for Advanced Skin Cancer
Most skin cancers are treated successfully with surgery alone. Medical oncology becomes involved when disease is advanced, has spread beyond the skin, or returns after prior treatment. At Katmai Oncology, we provide systemic therapy for complex and metastatic skin cancers with structured monitoring and multidisciplinary collaboration.
As a QOPI®-certified oncology practice, our board-certified oncologists and oncology-certified nurses develop treatment plans based on tumor type, stage, mutation testing, and overall health. We work in close collaboration with dermatologists, surgeons, and radiation oncologists when additional therapy is required.
Types of Skin Cancer We Treat
Our medical oncology team provides care for:
Advanced or metastatic melanoma
Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma with regional or distant spread
Basal cell carcinoma that has extended beyond the skin
Merkel cell carcinoma and other rare skin cancers
Recurrent or high-risk skin cancers requiring systemic treatment
Skin cancer in immunocompromised patients
When cancer involves lymph nodes or distant organs, systemic therapy may be recommended in addition to or instead of further surgery.
Medical Oncology Treatments for Skin Cancer
Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy plays a central role in treating advanced melanoma and certain other skin cancers. These medications help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. Treatment is delivered in our infusion suites with careful monitoring for immune-related side effects.
Targeted Therapy
Some melanomas carry specific mutations, such as BRAF alterations. When present, targeted medications may be prescribed, often in oral form. Therapy selection is based on molecular testing results and overall disease status.
Chemotherapy
Although less commonly used today for melanoma, chemotherapy may still be considered in select cases. Decisions are individualized based on prior treatments, tumor behavior, and overall health.
