Scalp Cooling Therapy

Reduce Hair Loss from Chemotherapy

We are proud to be the first oncology practice in Alaska to offer scalp cooling therapy. Scalp cooling can significantly reduce chemotherapy-related hair loss by lowering the amount of chemotherapy that reaches the hair follicles. It also may support faster hair regrowth once treatment is complete.

Amma Scalp Cooling

Amma is the first FDA-cleared, portable scalp cooling medical device to reduce chemotherapy-induced hair loss in adults over age 21 with solid tumors. Amma is unique among scalp cooling therapy options, due to its:

  • Compact size

  • Full portability, allowing patients to move around the infusion center during treatment

  • Custom-fitted wrap for secure, consistent contact with the scalp

Who Can Use Amma?

Amma is intended for adults over age 21 with solid tumors. Prior to beginning chemotherapy, your oncology care team will determine whether scalp cooling is appropriate for your cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy regimen and, when appropriate, prescribe the service.

What Does Scalp Cooling Feel Like?

Amma must cool the scalp substantially to be effective. Patients may want to bring a warm jacket or blanket to help them remain comfortable. Most patients become accustomed to the cold sensation within the first 30 minutes of treatment.

Is Amma Covered by Insurance?

Coverage may be available through Medicare and certain Aetna plans. Katmai will verify your benefits and discuss any expected out-of-pocket costs. We also offer a self-pay option.
