Hematology

Expert Care for Blood Cancers and Blood Disorders

Hematology is the field of medicine focused on diagnosing and treating diseases of the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system. At Katmai Oncology, our board-certified hematologists and medical oncologists provide comprehensive care for both blood cancers and non-cancerous blood disorders, from common conditions to the most complex.

Our hematology specialists are experienced in the management of anemia, clotting and bleeding disorders, and hematologic malignancies such as leukemia , lymphoma , and multiple myeloma. Each patient receives an individualized care plan supported by our on-site laboratory, infusion services, and OCN®-certified nursing team.

What is Hematology?

Hematology encompasses the study of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and the organs that produce them — primarily the bone marrow and lymphatic system.

Blood disorders can affect how oxygen is carried through the body, how the immune system fights infection, or how blood clots and heals. At Katmai Oncology, our hematologists work closely with patients to identify the underlying cause of blood abnormalities and develop a tailored treatment plan based on the latest clinical guidelines.

Conditions We Treat

Our hematology team provides expert evaluation and treatment for a broad spectrum of conditions, including:

• Blood cancers (hematologic malignancies)

• Leukemia (acute and chronic)

• Lymphoma, including Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin types

• Multiple myeloma and related plasma cell disorders

• Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and myeloproliferative disorders (MPNs)

• Non-cancerous blood disorders

• Anemia, including iron-deficiency, vitamin-related, and bone-marrow–related types

• Thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)

• Neutropenia (low white blood cell count)

• Bleeding disorders, including hemophilia and von Willebrand disease

• Clotting disorders, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE)

• Polycythemia and other abnormal blood cell production disorders

Our hematologists provide guidance on genetic and acquired conditions that increase clotting or bleeding risk. We also coordinate long-term management for chronic disorders that require ongoing monitoring.

Katmai Oncology Group utilizes personalized genomic testing to determine the most effective targeted therapies to deploy against your specific type of cancer.

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

At Katmai Oncology, diagnosis begins with a detailed blood evaluation using our in-house laboratory, which allows for same-day results and faster treatment decisions. Depending on the condition, your physician may recommend:

• Advanced blood and bone marrow testing

• Infusion therapy for anemia, clotting, or cancer-related treatments

• Oral or intravenous medications targeting specific pathways or deficiencies

• Coordinated care with transfusion services and regional bone marrow transplant centers when needed

• Long-term monitoring and survivorship follow-up for chronic blood conditions

Our team uses the latest evidence-based therapies — including targeted agents, immunotherapies for blood cancers, and supportive-care infusions — to ensure all Alaskans have access to leading-edge hematologic treatment.

Every hematology patient at Katmai Oncology is supported by a multidisciplinary team that emphasizes safety, comfort, and communication.
